Relieving Your Dog’s Cold Weather Aches and Pains
Joint osteoarthritis is the most common skeletal problem for dogs. Cold, moist winter weather causes diseased joints to swell and increase pain. These dogs get up from lying down slower and limp or show discomfort with initial exercise. They may be reluctant to go for walks or fetch toys or even go outside to pee or poop. Often owners will confuse these pain responses with behavior problems because osteoarthritis and behavior problems are both common in older dogs. It is important to diagnose joints affected with osteoarthritis and initiate treatment to relieve pain and improve mobility.
Diagnosis starts with x-rays. Any treatment requires the identification which joints are involved. Often owners think weakness in the hindlimbs is associated with arthritis in the hips. In fact, back problems and arthritic knees are more common than the hip problems. Some treatments for knees and back are completely different than those for hips. X-rays allow us to determine what areas of the body are involved and help direct proper treatment.
Treatments:
Cold Laser- Cold laser is a non-invasive procedure that relieves pain, reduces inflammation and speeds joint repair. Read more about cold laser on our website.
Essential Oils- Here at The Well Dog Place we use blends of essential oils that instantly relieve joint pain, reduce joint inflammation and help repair ligaments and tendons.
Supplements- We carry an array of natural supplements that also relieve pain, reduce inflammation and swelling in joints. Some also aid in joint repair.
Traditional Medications- In addition to traditional pain relievers like meloxicam and gabapentin, The Well Dog Place likes to include Adequan injections to our pain protocols. With no side effects, Adequan improves the mobility of diseased backs, hips, and knees.
